Needle Bearings
Needle bearing rollers have high length-to diameter ratios. They are quite commonly used in farm and construction equipment gasoline engines, gear pumps and small appliances. They may be lubricated with grease but oil based lubricants are considered for longitivity and smoothness.
Needle bearings have smaller rollers and have the highest load capacity for a given radial space of all rolling bearings. Needle roller bearings are available in different designs and a wide range of sizes, which are appropriate for different applications. In addition to customized designs, they comprise the following types:
Needle roller and cage assemblies made to special dimensions or configurations, such as those which are split to assemble around a one-piece crankshaft, can be made available upon special order where quantities permit. Special plated or coated cages to enhance life under conditions of high induced forces can also be made available.
Drawn-cup, full-complement needle bearings consist of a deep-drawn cup with a full complement of needles. In some needle bearings the needles are retained by the cup lips, in others by the grease. Spherical-ended rollers are used in the grease-retained needle bearings.
Drawn-cup, caged needle bearings are identical to full-complement bearings, except that a cage is used. They provide higher speeds and reduced load bearing capacity. They have better tolerance for misalignment.
Inner Rings are heat-treated and finished by grinding to a high degree of accuracy. In the case of needle roller bearings, normally, the shafts are heat treated and finished by grinding, and used as the raceway surfaces.
Combined Type needle roller bearings are combinations of a radial bearing and a thrust bearing.
Machined Type needle roller bearings are bearings with a low sectional height and large load ratings.
Heavy-duty needle bearings have a heavy outer ring made from materials, load capacity is higher. There is a problem of slippage between the roller and raceway surfaces, which occurs because the rollers are cylindrical rather than tapered.
Angular Contact Ball Bearings
Angular contact ball bearings are non-separable type bearings and typically used for carrying combined (axial and radial) loads. They can carry pure axial load and operate in higher speed. That's why many people refer to them incorrectly as thrust bearings. There are three basic types of angular contact ball bearings:
• Single Row Bearings
• Double Row Bearing
• Four Point Contact Ball Bearings
Single Row Angular Contact Ball Bearings:
Single row angular contact ball bearings can carry axial loads acting in one direction only. Under the radial loads the force acting in the axial direction needs to be countered. It is usually adjusted against the second bearing. These bearings have one high and one low shoulder on each ring allowing more number of balls to be incorporated.
There are two standard versions of single row angular contact ball bearings used for different purposes.
Only one bearing is used at a given bearing position.
Two or more bearings are positions at the given bearing position. They may be mounted adjacent, back to back or face to face position. Universal matching bearings are specially manufactured to be placed in adjacent arrangement to get a pre determined internal clearance.
Double Row Angular Contact Ball Bearings
The design of double row angular contact ball bearings is similar to two single row angular contact ball bearings placed adjacent. The design is non separable type. The basic design does not have filling slots and can accommodate equal axial loads in both directions.
The ones with a larger outer diameter have filling slots in one direction and have a pressed steel or machined brass cage. Bearings with E design have high load carrying capacity. They also have filling slots on one side and that allows incorporating large number of balls.
They are also available with shields (non-rubbing type) and seals (low friction and rubbing type) on both sides. They are filled with lithium based grease that inhibits rust and can operate from temperatures -30° C to 110° C.
Four Point Contact Ball Bearings
Four point contact ball bearings are single row having raceways that enable to accommodate axial loads in both directions. They need lesser axial space and a two part inner ring. This allows large number of balls to be incorporated and carry larger loads. The bearings are separable type. They are designed to accommodate axial loads and arranged as thrust bearings with radial clearance.

Deep Groove Ball Bearings are the most popular of all the ball bearing types because they are available in a wide variety of seal, shield and snap-ring arrangements. The bearing ring grooves are circular arcs made slightly larger than the radius of the ball. The balls make point contact with the raceways (elliptical contact when loaded). The inner ring shoulders are of equal height (as the outer ring shoulders).
Deep Groove ball bearings can sustain radial, axial, or composite loads and because of simple design, this bearing type can be produced to provide both high-running accuracy and high-speed operation. Consequently, they are available in many executions and sizes.
Deep groove ball bearing have various types in structure, beside open type bearings, shield or seals at both side can also be provided
Deep groove ball bearings are non-separable and require little attention or maintenance in service, capable of operating at high speeds and are widely used radial bearings. The inner and outer ring of single row deep groove ball bearings have a deep groove raceway, the bearings are mainly used to carry radial loads and a part of axial loads in two directions. This kind of bearing can carry much heavy axial loads after the increase of radial clearance, thus, it can take the place of high speed angular contact ball bearings.
